3 Wheeler Buggies

A tri-wheeled stroller is ideal for off-roading and provides an easy ride for babies. They are also simpler to push and maneuver than a four-wheeler and are especially suitable for those with slings made of fabric or modular seat units that are placed in a tight position within the frame and deliver the most efficient shape and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled vehicles are very stable, and this makes them an excellent choice for off-road walking (especially when equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). They typically have large front tires that can handle bumps, kerbs, and rough terrain. Some have a lockable wheels in the front to give you extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.

It's worth bearing in mind that 3-wheel buggies can have a lower centre of gravity than models with four wheels, which can mean that they topple over more easily. That said, the best 3-wheel buggies have the an ideal geometry and design to ensure that they remain solid in all conditions. They should be able to turn at a whim and be easy to steer using one hand. They also feature the ability to rotate 360o on the front wheel that is ideal for maneuvering over difficult terrain.

For surfaces that are extremely challenging, look out for an air-filled model which are also referred to as pneumatic tyres. These are designed to work on roads that are not paved and can deal with rocks, mud, and so on. Many all-terrain buggies feature a swivelling front wheel that can be locked to increase stability when dealing with extremely rough terrain too.

A 3-wheeled pram is a great choice for those who run and enjoy walking fast uphill. This is especially true if you plan to attach an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent example. It has an incline-reclining seat that is flat, with five-point harnesses, and plenty of storage space to keep all your equipment (plus a 50+ extendable sun hood). It's compact, lightweight and suitable for infants and can be used with a carrycot or car seat. It also allows for some light jogging, but isn't designed for serious joggers.

Weight

If you're seeking a buggy that can tackle terrain that is difficult, you should pick one with large tires. They will be able to handle cobbles, grass, and dirt tracks and provide a smooth ride for all passengers. They are also great for jogging because they have built in suspension and are easy to move up and down kerbs. The trade-off is that they're a bit heavy to push.

The best 3 wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3-wheel buggy is very maneuverable due to its 16 rear wheels as well as a lockable front wheel. It comes with air tyres which require pumping occasionally and it can be used to carry children up to 3. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the seat shape and she was able to steer it easily with her three-year-old riding along.

The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another great option. It comes with a movable handlebar, a high-quality hood that provides 50+ UV protection, and an extremely high-quality hood. It is also easy to move up and down kerbs and fits into a the car's boot space in a small size. It can be used as a stroller along with baby carriers or toddlers.

Sling seats made of fabric fit snugly within the buggie's frame rather than sitting on top of it as modular seats. This design has an lower centre of gravity at the perfect height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you cannot overestimate how often you'll be doing this when you're a new parent!)

Seating

There are a myriad of alternatives for seating options in 3 wheelers. The carrycot included is ideal for a baby (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfortable and cosy lying-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy). Older babies and toddlers will enjoy the large and comfortable seat unit that has adjustable ventilation. The seats don't fully recline, but they can be lowered down to the lowest point. This should give your child plenty of headroom and space.

A fabric sling is also available. It has the advantage that it is positioned inside the frame instead of being placed on top of it as a modular seat. This creates a lower center of gravity, with a perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this style of seat dealt with the obstacles.

In addition to a big shopping basket, this kind of buggy generally has pretty useful features such as an extended 50+ UV hood, a simple brake pedal and some games-changing visibility lights that appear from the handlebars and can be placed in front of the occupants to ensure their safety when tackling tricky terrain.

If you're looking for a buggy that will grow with your family it's the sport(tm) is a first in the world that can take in a newborn and then be adapted to accommodate three or more children as they grow. All within a single footprint.

Stores

The 3-wheeled frame makes the buggy more stable to push one handed and also perfect for handling rough terrain. However, it also means that the basket won't hold as much as a four-wheeled buggy.

A top-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a cushioned grip for comfort and excellent suspension. It should be able to accommodate a carrycot or a car seat, meaning you can use it right from the time of birth.

MFM's reviewers discovered that the 3-wheeler frame didn't fit through their home's doors or car boot. If you're concerned about space, be sure to check out the dimensions when the buggy is folded before purchasing.

Look for a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3!) seats. seats as your family grows. These are the most efficient of both and future proof your money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the most popular that can be used as a single from day dot and later converts to a twin buggies when your baby begins walking.

Tyres

These tires cushion bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more comfortable. They're commonly found on pushchairs, such as the Phil & Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to be "an amazing ride for my toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres make it easy to navigate cobbles and kerbs.

These tyres are sometimes tricky to keep inflated and must be replenished regularly. They are also more vulnerable to punctures than foam tyres so you'll need to ensure that you have repair kits with spare tubes and a pump in case you go traveling with your buggy.

PU tyres are more commonly used on pushchairs because they are a cheaper option than tyres filled with air, but they are just as durable. You can identify PU tires by their smooth appearance and soft feel. They also slide easily on uneven and tied surfaces.

It's usually possible to identify the distinction between air-filled and PU tire by running your fingers over them, if it feels firm, then it's made of rubber, when it slides, it's a PU. You can also test if your buggy is fitted with PU tyres sliding them on an even, smooth surface. They should roll smoothly and fit comfortably into wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are able to withstand the rough terrain of high-performance buggies. This could make your buggy less stable since the foam loses its springy quality. These tyres are also noisy due to the fact that they create lots of noise when you turn or drive around the town.
