CBT Motorcycle Course For Novice Riders

A1 permits you to ride a scooter, small motorcycle, and take the pillion ride of a passenger if you are 17 or older.

Two-day course with no tests. This is a great way to get started with riding. It focuses on re-learning the main parts of a bicycle, as well as slow exercises for controlling.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

The CBT is a required course for all novice riders. It typically takes a full day to complete and if you are able to meet the required standards at the end of the day your instructor will award you with a certificate of completion which is referred to as a DL196.

In this class, you will learn the basics of operating a motorcycle. You will be guided throughout the course by a knowledgeable instructor. The next element of the CBT is practical on-site riding. Your instructor will identify an area of safety where you can practice your abilities. This portion of the course introduces you to different kinds and types of roads and traffic. You'll learn how to be safe around traffic lights and roundabouts as well as how to navigate one-way streets. Module 1 Theory Test

The first step in obtaining an A1 license is passing your motorcycle test. This is a 40-minute test which tests your understanding of traffic laws, road rules signs, and general safety. To increase your chances of passing, it's advised to study the Highway Code prior to taking this test.

The day following your CBT you will start your module 1 training. You will be riding a bike that is appropriate to your particular category of licence. Once you've passed your Module 1, you'll then be able to take your Module 2 practical test, which takes place on the roads. Module 2: Practical Test

Module 2 is the practical portion of your motorcycle licence. Once you have passed Module 1 and the theory test, you are now ready to take Module 2. This test will grant you an A1 license which allows you to ride bikes up to 125cc with a maximum power of 11 BHP. You are also able to travel on motorways and carry passengers.

The Mod 2 test is an independent riding test that takes approximately 10 minutes. The examiner will be following you on a predetermined road route that has varying traffic and road conditions. The route is crowded with junctions, roundabouts, and dual carriageways. You'll need to be able to navigate in different conditions.

Module 2 will test your ability to be observant, anticipate and navigate through busy roads. This is important because it allows you to make quick decisions when driving on the road. You will need to be able to respond quickly if, for instance you are driving along the road and spot that a vehicle is moving towards your direction.

It is also expected to be able to demonstrate good control at a slow speed. This includes being able pull away smoothly, stopping without fear, and maintaining speed. You should be able demonstrate effective braking, and execute an uncontrolled U-turn whenever necessary.


In the end you'll be assessed on your ability to signal and shift gears. You'll be asked to indicate when you are overtaking a vehicle, and when exiting a junction, as well as changing gears when needed.

After completing both parts of Module 2, you will receive a letter with your A1 licence. You can then ride your new bike with fashion and comfort through the countryside, or to work. Your brand new A1 licence is your ticket to freedom and adventure whether you're riding a supermoto or a scooter.

This course is suitable for those who have their Module 1 & 2 completed and are looking to enhance their riding abilities and build a relationship with their bike.
