How to Repair a Remote Key

While most remote key fobs are equipped with excellent battery life, they'll eventually get worn out. Some times it is simple to replace the batteries in the device, but in other cases the issue could be more severe.

Take the remote apart and clean the buttons. Then move them out and in. These techniques might be all you need to get your key fob working.

Battery

Car key remotes use CR2025 or CR2032 batteries, and they can often be replaced when the fob is functional. If not, you can inspect the battery terminals or buttons to determine if there are any parts that are loose. key repairs should be able to solder the buttons and terminals back in place. However, you will need to know what type of battery is installed in the fob.

If the battery isn't the problem you can try an alternate key fob to determine whether you are able to unlock or start your vehicle using it. If you can, then it's time for a replacement of the primary fob. If it doesn't require replacement, you'll require a professional to examine it to find the problem. It could be a simple reconfiguration, or it may require other types of repair. There's also the possibility that your vehicle lost your fob and isn't something you can fix on your own.

Case Study

The outer plastic enclosure of a remote is referred to as the case. It usually comes with an alternative button pad. It is essential to choose a new case as the original one is likely to be a bit shabby, and it is essential that the circuit board is placed correctly inside the case. The circuit board is responsible for the function of the key fob. It can be tested using a standard multimeter by setting it to the RF (radio frequency) mode and holding a radio scanner tuned to the same frequency the key fob is using close to it, and listening for pulsing signals when a the button's presses.

Another thing to examine is the contact points for buttons on the keypad, which may be loose or damaged over time. A careful soldering process to put them back in place will often restore them to full functionality unless they break completely.

Buttons

IF your key fob buttons don't work anymore or are difficult to press you may need a dorman or motormite remote key housing replacement can be purchased for a low price online for the year/make/model you have. Then, simply pop the circuit board from your old case into the new. For certain models you may have to adjust the position of the board slightly. You can then apply aluminum foil using double-sided tape to adhere it to the black contact points on the buttons.

Programming

The key fob and the receiver in your car are connected however, this connection may be damaged. A professional will inspect the car to determine the make of the vehicle, year of manufacture and model. They use specialist equipment to re-pair or program a blank fob or transponder chip (or clone a key if this is possible). Then they test the remote to make sure that it works.

It is crucial to be careful when reprogramming a blank key, as the process can be a bit complicated and different manufacturers require slightly different steps. It is also possible to skip a step or delay too long before leaving the programming mode, so it is recommended to hire a professional with comprehensive knowledge of the security system of your vehicle to avoid damaging the car. Some key programming tools can also detect diagnostic trouble codes in your vehicle. This will help you fix or resolve other issues.
