Evolution Korea In the past, the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer an alternative. The STR has been fighting to remove the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is just one aspect of how the development paradigm has changed. What is Evolution? The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which may lead to variations in genes or whole genomes. These changes can, over generations lead to the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how people with traits that are advantageous are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less favorable traits. This differing reproduction may eventually lead to the creation and evolution of new species. The term "evolution" comes from the Latin word meaning unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has a myriad of meanings since it took form in the fields of science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student. Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of living or producing offspring. In time, genetic variation can lead a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the growth in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations. Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They claim that the theory should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from textbooks for high school and have also gotten rid of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestor of birds. Why is Evolution Important? Evolution explains how Earth and all living species evolved. While these are troubling developments, it is important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists. The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as the development of new medicines or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve the quality of animal and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others hold a an intense belief in God. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists typically fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC). The most well-known type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created just recently. OECs are less well known However, they are as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth. Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the pioneers of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear that they would lose credibility. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and also special creation. They refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this theory, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. In the end the evolutionary changes result in new species identical to the original species. Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they grew slowly afterward. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter. In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are however more flexible and permit both evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curriculum. What is Creationism in Korea? When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this campaign. STR has achieved its first victory in removing examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The next goal is to remove the finch-research of Darwin's famed as well as on human evolution. STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an unflattering image for students. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
