The Best Bedside Cot For Newborns

A bedside crib is a bassinet style crib that is attached to the side of your mattress. This makes it simple to reach your baby during the night for a relaxed feeding. They are suitable from birth until around six months.

The Lullaby Trust and the NHS both recommend that newborns are kept in separate cots from their parents bed. This will reduce the chance of SIDS. The best cribs for bedside use make it possible.

1. Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper and Clear-Vue

When co-sleeping was a brand-new concept, a father-and-son team formed Arm's Reach and came up with a concept that would allow parents to safely sleep alongside their newborns. It was the very first bedside cot that allowed babies to sleep close without falling over or suffocating the mattress. The Clear-Vue is still in wide use and has an average of 25 years and no reported injuries or deaths.

It has built-in leg extensions to allow for different mattress heights and includes an upholstered cover and sheet. The bassinet is meant for newborns up to five months or until they begin pushing up on their hands and knees depending on when that happens. The Co-Sleeper can be used as a stand-alone, standalone bassinet or it can be affixed to the parent's bed with the included attachment strap and plate. The Co-Sleeper is easy to switch between both modes by pulling strings. However it is not able to meet federal standards as an attached bed. Therefore, your baby should not be left unattended.

McKenna was also impressed by the Co-Sleeper's accessibility. She noted that it is easy to lift your child in and out of the bassinet from the comfort of your bed to feed them during the night or for other needs. He also praised safety of the Co-Sleeper as it meets all requirements for baby bassinets and cribs. It's been on the marketplace for decades and "about 1.5 million units have been sold" with no reports of infant accidents or deaths.

In our tests, the Clear-Vue was the simplest to reach of all the bedside cots we tested. Its swiveling sleeping area and height adjustment allowed you to easily reach into your child's room and provide comfort. The Clear-Vue does not have lower sidewalls, which require you to stand or crouch down to grab your baby.

The Clear-Vue is the only one of our top picks that doesn't attach to a parent's bed however, it was a close second and far better than some we tested that were intended to be connected to a bed for parents. It is strong, solid feel and has plenty of storage space.

2. HALO Bassinest

The HALO Swivel Bassinest Sleeper is the only bedside cot that rotates 360 degrees which brings baby closer, making it easier for parents get in and out. There are a variety of versions of the Bassinest. One is the standard Essentia, which has no additional features. Another is the LUXE Plus series, which includes white noise and vibrating to help babies fall asleep and remain asleep. Both models come with a fitted sheet, mattress pad and a large storage bag that is larger than other Bassinest alternatives.
