Downspouts

Gutters are the most effective way to divert water from your home or building, preventing foundation issues and leaks. However, gutter systems aren't complete without downspouts. They are the extensions that drain rainwater out of the gutters and direct it away from your home or structure. Installing downspouts on the sides of gutters can help reduce the risk of clogging and other problems.

You can purchase downspouts in various lengths, based on the amount of rainfall you receive in the typical year. They are also available in a variety of materials from copper to vinyl to galvanized steel. Each type of downspout comes with its own advantages and drawbacks. Aluminum downspouts, for example are light and cost-effective. They are also able to be curved to match the design of your home. They are also resistant to dents and can withstand our hot Texas summers.

Begin by taking measurements of the distance from the gutter to where you want the downspout to finish. A level is much easier to use than a ladder, or a tape measure. Mark the downspout's flange with a marker or pencil after you've measured the length. Cut the downspout to the required size by using a hacksaw or cutting. Once the downspout has been cut to size then crimp the edges using a special downspout crimper or a pair of needle-nose pliers.

After the downspout has been crimped, attach it to your gutter using sheet metal screws. Attach an elbow at the top of the downspout and then another below it in an S shape. Attach a gutter bracket to the wall of your home, just below the first elbow. Then, screw another bracket halfway down the downspout. Finally you can screw an additional bracket on the bottom, just above the final elbow.

If your downspouts are loose from the gutters, it's due to the outlet tubes that connect the downspout to the gutters are broken or missing. The outlet tubes comprise cylinders which are connected to the gutter by four pop rivets or screw. The outlets can be purchased at any hardware store or on the internet.

End Caps

End caps for gutters and downspout outlets must be sealed to prevent water leakage.
