With so many essentials for babies to consider, a top crib bed is among the most important items to purchase. This guide will assist you in choosing the right cot for your baby.

This premium option fits perfectly it perfectly Scandi style nurseries. It's a durable and sturdy option that will grow with your child. It has three mattress height options and the ability to remove the sides for a stylish bench-style toddler bed.

Budget

There is a cot for every nursery and budget. There are also different choices that come with different durations and some of them can be transformed into toddler beds to be used throughout the preschool years or even beyond. Naturally, those which convert into beds are generally more expensive but the extra investment could be worth it in the event that you need a cot that lasts for a long time instead of just the duration of a few months.

The Mamas & Papas Coxley was our overall winner due to its stunning design and easy-to-assemble design. It's a great choice for parents looking for a top quality crib that can stand the years. Our testers for parents liked the minimalist design and warm oak finish of this model, which looks beautiful in a contemporary nursery. This cot bed comes with a drawer that mum tester Katrina believed was an excellent alternative to cheaper cots with an integrated drawer. It also has an anti-bite strip that runs along the top rails of the cot to prevent your child's teeth from getting caught. However, at over PS599 with a mattress that is sold separately, this cot isn't cheap and it requires an Allen key to start it up.

The cot for the Elementary is a more affordable option that can give your baby a peaceful night's sleep. It's part of the Anyday range by John Lewis. Our testers with parents liked the simple design and simple assembly. The cot is compact when folded and can be stored away easily too, fitting into a carry bag that's as big as the carry case for a camp chair. It's not ideal for camping in the car but it's perfect for apartment life or those who won't be moving their cot around too often.

The SnuzKot is an additional budget-friendly cot that we recommend particularly if you decide to go with the toddler kit and mattress extender (sold separately). It will grow with your child until around four years old, and our dad testers loved the fact it converted to a minimalist toddler bed and created an ambiance of cocoons by incorporating a fabric canopy.

Safety

A cot that is well-designed will not only be in compliance with UK safety standards, but also feel solid and secure. Look for a sturdy design with bars of safety or sides, and a solid foundation, so that your child is unable to get out. Some cots have additional features, such as teething rails or drawers under the bed which can aid you in staying organized as your baby develops.

Parent test subject Becki says her Boori cot "has endured through 3 kids and still looks amazing." Its traditional style will fit in with any home and is made of sustainably-sourced Australian Araucaria and New Zealand Radiata wood, so you can feel good about the purchase. It converts from a cot to a toddler bed (leaving three sides open to give you security) and also has the option for an extension kit to take it all the way up to a double bed when your child is ready.

This stylish but simple cot is an excellent choice for those with a tight budget. It's simple to assemble with clearly marked components and clear instructions. It comes with three mattress options, so you can adjust the height as your baby grows. It is compatible with most standard cot mattresses and is a good buy for the money.

This is a fantastic option if you are looking for a high-end cot. It can be used as a cot and has four mattress positions. It will last until your child are around three years old. It is also foldable and has wheels that lock, making it easy for moving it from one room to another.

The cot is extremely lightweight at just 6kg and comes with a great bag for travel. It's also extremely durable with an extremely sturdy frame that can be able to withstand the rigors of toddlers. Our testers found it a bit tricky to put together, but the instructions were well-written and clear. The slats were placed far enough apart to avoid fingers getting caught between them. It is also more expensive than other cots we have reviewed, but the quality and durability are worth the cost.

Design

When you are buying a cot bed, it's easy to be engrossed in the specifications and safety features, but don't overlook the style. It's important that you choose a cot bed that is both practical and attractive.

The ickle bubba Snowdon Classic Bed is the ideal cot bed for design lovers, with its sleek modern take on a traditional sleigh design that doesn't have the bulky feeling that these beds can often feature. It's packed with storage space-saving features, including an under-bed drawer that can be tucked away beneath the cot and teething rails on the side. It was strong and sturdy. The three-position height of the base allows it to grow with your child.

Alternatively alternatively, the Modena cot bed from Tutti Bambini offers excellent value for money and comes with an elegant panel design that will look great in any nursery. It is designed to last your child until they reach the age of six older. It converts into a junior mattress and then into an elegant sofa bed. It is also one of only a few cot beds that we have tested with an apex drawer, a teething rail, and a hanging rail.

great crib with a sleek panelled design is the Stokke Sleepie Cot Bed, which is available in several colour options to coordinate with the decor of your nursery. The storage drawer was especially useful for bedding and clothes. Our mum testers were impressed by the features. It is also one of the easiest cot bed to put together. The components are clearly labelled, and the instructions are easy to follow. It's also a great alternative for those with limited space because it can be rolled up and then collapsed. It's a standard cot mattress (140cm by 70cm), and is suitable for children from birth through toddlerhood. An extension kit allows it to be used up to 10 years old.

Convertibility

There are many baby essentials you need to think about as you become a new parent. But one of the most important is a quality cot bed. You need something that will last as long as possible and grow with your child, giving them a safe and comfortable place to sleep.

Some cots are designed to be more than just a bed for children. Our top pick is the Boori Eton Convertible Bed, which can be converted into an infant bed (L207cm x W147cm x H90cm) and also a sofa and daybed (L234cm x W145cm x H70cm). This makes it the longest-lasting choice on our list, as it is designed to last through from birth to childhood.

It's a little more expensive than some of the other cot beds we tested, but its premium design and feel will look great in any nursery. The instructions could have been more clear, but our parent testers were awed by the ease with which it was for them to build and set up. This is a minor fault however, as it was still very simple and took less than 30 minutes to complete.

This cot comes with four base heights for the mattress. This is an upgrade from the three most common options. This lets you adjust the cot as your child grows. They may need an upper or lower base level, based on their age and ability. It also comes with teething rails and a strip that runs along the top to guard it from being bitten.

This cot comes in several different Scandi-inspired finishes and our dad tester was especially attracted by the grey-colored finish. It's not cheap, but it does offer excellent value for money since it will last your child through to toddlerhood and beyond. It also comes with an assurance of one year so you can be sure it will last. The only thing you'll need to buy separately is a mattress which is not included.
