The Band Toto

Some people complain about Toto for being too polished and calculated, but in concert the band reveals more raw, raw energy. Guitarist-extraordinaire Steve Lukather demonstrates why he is considered one of the best session musicians in the business.

Albums


Toto's discography includes 13 studio albums and 4 live albums. There are also a few compilations. In addition to the release of original music, Toto has also done collaborations with other artists and on soundtracks for films. The band has won multiple Grammy Awards for their work.

Before Toto was formed The members of the band performed session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggsalbum in 1975 Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 in the wake of the collaboration.

Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics due to lacking hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen resigned the group, and they held auditions to find a replacement frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.

In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by scouring through old tapes and demos to release a special album called Toto XX. The album was well-received by fans and the band embarked on a tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams.

Shem von Schröck took over Leland Sklar as the drummer during the tour in support of the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included recordings from the tour and an interview with the band.

During the tour, lead singer Bobby Kimball was arrested on drug charges. The band decided to let him go at the end of the tour and hired singer/guitarist Joseph Williams in his place. Drummer David Hungate also left the group after the tour. He was replaced by bassist Leland Sklar.

Before and during the formation of Toto, its members did sessions for various artists. Toto was created following Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and Boz Scaggs recorded Silk Degrees. Paich played keyboards on Steely Dan records, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

In 1998, Toto began working on a special project called Old Is New. This album included three new tracks, as well as a number of finished recordings of old songs. The album was a hit all over the world and the band went on a world tour to promote it.

The group has recorded soundtracks for a number of movies and television series.

Toto was formed in Los Angeles, California by high school friends, David Paich, Steve Lukather and brothers Jeff and Mike Porcaro. The group became one of the most well-known rock groups around the globe and has sold more than 40 million albums. They continue to play sold-out shows across the globe and has been awarded numerous awards and accolades. Toto's members take their music seriously, but don't take themselves all that seriously. This has been a key factor in their success.
