Robot vacuums are great for keeping your floors clean but they are not a substitute for a regular vacuum. Even the best robots can struggle to get deep into carpets or rugs, and can often get tangled in cords and socks.

Battery Life

Most robot vacuums are equipped to handle a few cleaning sessions without needing to be charged. A longer battery lifespan also means the robot can spend more time cleaning and less time charging its dock. You should select the model with a self-emptying bin. These models are more efficient at picking up debris and returning back to the dock to recharge. It's important to clean or replace filters and wipe down sensors and cameras regularly so that they can be seen clearly.


Smart mapping technology is a useful feature to be looking for because it allows you to program your robot to only clear certain rooms or areas where it's likely to hit furniture or other obstacles. The most advanced robots are able to map out multiple floors and can recognize landmarks such as doors and windows. The most advanced models, like the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, come with a dual-sensor navigation device that utilizes the LIDAR sensor to map out the space and a structured light camera at the front of the bot to detect objects in real-time. This allows the S8 to stay clear of common obstacles, such as power cords and furniture legs and can store up to four floor maps in its internal memory.

More affordable models don't have this type of object detection and rely on bump sensors which aren't as accurate. In my tests they were able to see through dog poop and cords as well as a pair of shoes placed in the middle. The most cost-effective choice Dreametech D10+, is one exception to this. It is a great carpet and hard floor pickup, excellent hair and tangle pickup, and an almost perfect auto empty score.

Another feature worth mentioning is a huge onboard dustbin that doesn't need to be manually empty, and for those models that mop, a water tank that can hold weeks worth of cleaning sessions. The Karcher RCV 5 has this and a big enough footprint that it can be tucked away under furniture, but not so large that it won't fit in the nook between your bathtub and toilet.

Apps

Robot vacuums are similar to their upright counterparts and require lots of technology to keep them current. The result is a pretty mature market that is brimming with options. Even the top models require input from their users especially when it comes to schedule cleanings, create the floor plan of your home and install virtual barriers.

Consider a model with its own app that can identify the layout of your house and save the settings for future use. This will let the robot vacuum begin where it left off on subsequent runs, without having to start the mapping process each time.

Also, consider models that offer zone or spot cleaning. You can tell the robot vacuum cleaner to focus on an area, like under the table after a huge family meal. It is possible to do this using the app or via voice commands.

Avoidance of objects is a different option that is available on numerous models. It lets the robot see something in its path, for instance the shoe box or a crate filled with dog toys, and coach itself around it. Robot vacuums that include the ability to map are a great option for pet owners, as they are designed to analyze your home and develop plans of attack in accordance with the layout and obstacles in each room. If you're not looking for something tiny it is recommended to select a robot that can hold at least a full bag of trash from one cleaning session.
