BMW Key Fobs - More Than Just Locks and Unlocks

A BMW key fob does more than just lock and unlock your car. It also controls your windows and even start your engine.

To program a new BMW key, place it into the ignition and turn it from one position to return five times as quickly. Press the lock button three times.

BMW key fobs are made to allow you to access your vehicle without having to use a physical key. They can also be used to lock and unlock your vehicle remotely. They have a range of approximately 30 feet and can usually unlock the trunk with the press of the button.

Certain BMW models have a "Smartkey" feature which allows you to use your smartphone as a replacement for the key fob. Before starting taking off any keys made of metal from the key fob. Then, press in an elongated tab close to the center of the key fob and pull the metal valet key out of its slot. This will reveal a gap, opening the fob's case and replace the old battery. Use a small screwdriver to break the fob apart and wrap the head of the screwdriver with tape to guard against scratches as you work. The old battery should pop out easily, and you can replace it with the new one. Make sure that the positive side faces downward and the negative side faces towards your key fob. Reassemble the fob and replace the keys made of metal you removed earlier.
