Guild Wars 2 Item Upgrade Item upgrade, commonly known as "upping," improves an item's stats. Each upgrade increment boosts a stat linearly. Players can recycle up to six items at a time to gain a level gauge for each of the item's upgraded components. The cost of recycling items increases with their rarity and item level. Upgrade components In Guild Wars 2, an upgrade to an item is a method to increase the stats of your weapons and armor. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including by using upgrade components or increasing the rarity of an item or its mark level. In addition, many items can be reforged, which could increase their stats. There are items that can be upgraded throughout the game. They are available throughout all over the world, as well as rewards for missions. They can also be crafted by players. Upgrade components are the primary method to upgrade equipment. These are items that slot into equipment. Most equipment comes with upgrade slots, and most require a certain level of upgrade. Some upgrade components give specific bonuses while others provide general bonuses. There are many types of upgrade elements available in the game. These include universal upgrades, inscriptions and jewels. Universal upgrades, like gems and enchantments, can be put on any equipment and provide smaller bonuses than equipment-specific upgrades. Glyphs can only be found in gathering tools. They provide a variety bonuses, from increasing the speed at which an item gathers to providing additional crafting materials. To upgrade an item, simply select it in your inventory, then open the Upgrade window. This will display an overview on the right side of the screen showing what the expected stats are after the upgrade, and any necessary components or materials. The Upgrade button at the bottom will be labeled as blocked if you don't have enough of either. The number of upgrade components needed for a specific item is displayed in the upper-right corner of the Upgrade window. The cost of upgrading increases depending on the rarity and level of the item. However you can cut down on the cost by purchasing upgrades from a vendor or trading them with other players. Many weapons can be improved by a prefix such as a rune, or an insignia. Other weapons can be improved with a suffix. These upgrades change the name of the item and add an adjective, like 'Radiant' or 'Minor Vigor.' The exceptions are the non-inscribable weapons, such as shields and foci from Prophecies and Factions campaigns, that cannot be upgraded using any kinds of mods in any way. Glyphs Glyphs are a powerful tool for communicating visual information. They are animated to grab the attention of the viewer and stimulate curiosity in the brain. The animation of glyphs mimics the body language, making them more effective in transmitting an inter-linguistic message. Glyphs can also trigger a feeling of familiarity in the brain, which increases retention of the message. Each glyph increases a stat's value by a specific amount. This is clearly displayed on the item's page when you open it in the Glyph Storage. This range is the maximum value that a glyph can increase a stat's value by but not the amount it actually increases the stat by. The actual value of the glyph is determined by the tier and the quality of the item you are enchanting it to. Most upgrade components slotted into items are not able to be replaced or salvaged without dismantling the equipment in question, except for legendary equipment and upgrades. If you have a rune or glyph you do not want to use, but it's not been applied to the gear yet, you can move the item to another piece by selecting the Upgrade Glyphs menu within the Glyphs Panel. This will create a Glyph Set that includes the selected glyph. You can take out the glyph using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or an Ascended Salvage tool. This will destroy the item in which it is installed however, you can salvage the upgraded item by using the glyph and its fragments, so this should not be considered a loss. When you take away an item after adding a glyph, the shards that are part of that glyph will disappear. You can also apply the glyph to your equipment to add an additional benefit. Deferred Damage, for example can be used to store damage and then be dealt slowly to the wearer rather than all at once. This is helpful for players who are taking many hits from enemies but don't want to be overwhelmed. Reroll tokens Reroll tokens are used to alter the affixes that are placed on weapons and equipment. They can be obtained from a variety of sources, such as mystery boxes or rare drops from skulled monsters or by killing bosses. Each reroll provides the player with a random affix that is usually better than what they had before. Reroll tokens can also be a good way to reroll weapon stats and can be upgraded to provide better damage or other perks. Items that have been rerolled will not appear in the upgrade menu, however, they can still receive upgrades. When you press the "upgrade button" you can recycle the rerolled items. This will change the layout of the item's window and let up to six items to be chosen for recycling. Recycling an item can add a small amount of points to its level gauge. This amount is determined by the item's rarity as well as its level, which means higher-level items are more useful to recycle than lower-level ones. In addition to tokens for rerolls players can also use Star Remnants and Reroll Tokens to roll the Weapon Traits of an upgraded unit. Rerolls roll the percentage chance of a weapon trait; if it rolls higher, the weapon will be upgraded. If it is lower, the weapon remains the same. Weapons can be upgraded up to 3 times. Rerolls are a good option for upgrading an item, but players should be aware that it can reduce the overall ilvl the weapon by the number of rerolls required to increase it to the final level. This effect of lowering is most effective for Diadems and ring items, which have no alternatives to raise their ilvls. The reroll system has been criticized by players as being too expensive and it's more fair to let people pay for it in the form of money or food items that would allow players to modify their builds without a lot of time and effort. However paying for rerolls is not something that the developers would like to implement at this point in the game's development. They plan to add an ingredient that allows players to change their race in the future. Leveling There are many ways to increase the level of an item upgrade. The first is to increase the amount of upgrade, which increases the upgrade value of the stat. The second is to boost the effect of upgrading which increases the damage or heal of a specific stat. Finally there is the possibility to upgrade the base item to a more powerful upgrade type. When this is done, the new item will maintain its iLevel, but will benefit from the upgrade effects of the upgraded type of item. It is important to remember that upgrades can be random. In most cases a better roll is determined by glyphs. However there are instances when a greater or special roll could occur. The item type will also determine the iLevel. If you upgrade a unique or rare item to a unique kind of item, it has a chance of getting an upper level. Upgrades can be expensive, especially if you are upgrading your equipment from the standard track to legendary. The price will depend on the item's base iLevel and the amount of upgrade levels it comes with. Additionally, upgrade item require crests to achieve the next upgrade level. If you're lucky the upgraded item could attain the highest level on its upgrade track, and thus unlock an additional effect. This will give you a substantial increase in the value of the item. The bonus effect is different with each upgrade level. Generally speaking, the upgrade effect is increased by a factor of +3. Based on the item's level of base and upgrade process, the iLevel for the upgraded item will also change. For example an item that has been upgraded from a rare or unique item to an outstanding one can be expected to gain the Enhanced Defense of the new base item.
