Dual Fuel Range Cooker With 13amp Plug

Are you a home cook who enjoys the fast heating control of gas cooktops, but requires an electric oven to bake? Discover a dual fuel range cooker that gives you the best of both worlds.

Many experienced home chefs favor gas cooktops due to their superior temperature control and ability to utilize advanced cooking techniques such as charcoaling. These stoves are expensive, particularly in the event that you require an additional gas hook-up and electrician for installation.

What is a 13amp outlet?

If you own a dual-fuel range cooker (also called a gas and electric oven), you will need an electrical outlet of 13 amps. The plug must be wired by a certified electrician to the cooker ring.

This ensures that the flow of current through the plug doesn't exceed the limit of safety, which could lead to an electrical fire. The plug is equipped with an electric fuse that regulates the current. The fuse goes out as soon as the current passes through it beyond its capacity. This protects the appliance from overload of electricity.

The fuse is listed at 13 amps as indicated on the top of the plug and this is the maximum amount of current that the plug can carry without causing damage to the appliance or overheating the socket. It is essential that when replacing fuses you always use the same rated amps as the original. You run the risk of overheating a socket if you replace a fuse that has a different rating.

A 13 amp fuse will be a ceramic type, which is very durable and is able to withstand high temperatures generated by a range cooker. The ceramic element is also fire-proof, making it a better option than other kinds of fuse.

There are many ways in which a 13 amp plug can be fitted. It could be wired to an existing live socket, and the flex is connected to it by an screw or a plastic jaw type cord clamp. The plug must be placed in a secure position and tightened, making sure the clamp is secure.

Some plugs may have a cardboard wiring diagram over the pins. These should be removed prior to connecting the wires. It is crucial that the wires are trimmed to the correct length as leaving them too long can cause them to be crushed when the plug cover is replaced. The earth wire should be the longest to ensure it is connected before the neutral and line pins.

How do I connect a 13amp plug?

The vast majority dual fuel range cookers sold in UK are powered by a 13 amp plug. This is important because ovens can draw large amounts of current, while the standard plug sockets have a 10 amp rating.

In general, new appliances should include a plug at the point of sale. This is in order to be in compliance with the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety Regulations) 1994. However, older appliances might not have an outlet and that is where the issue arises.

The first thing to do when connecting a cooker to an existing plug socket is to make sure that the fuse rating of the fuse box is in line with that of the plug. This is important since a fuse that is not properly sized can be dangerous.

It is also recommended to check that the fuse is fully seated into the cartridge, and that there isn't any excessive movement. The next step is to prepare the flex that will be used. Remove the sheathing to reveal the three conductors insulated. Use a utility blade to cut the sheathing beyond the cord grip at the entry point of the plug. The blade will not be able to penetrate the insulated conductors. This nick should be wide enough to allow the sheathing to split and then expand as it is pulled back revealing the cable beneath. Finally cut off the excess sheathing, leaving about 40mm extending beyond the flexing end.

This flex is placed over the plug with the earth terminal at the top, and the neutral and live terminals at the bottom. Utilizing the colored conductors to guide you, the sheathing is then removed from each pin and the internal cable is fixed into the appropriate terminal using the cord grip. If the plug has a screw-type cord clamp loosen it, and then pull back the insulation to expose the copper conductors. Finally, connect each conductor that is insulated to the proper terminal (starting with the earth, then neutral and finally the live) using the channel they are running through the plug.

What is the maximum draw of a 13 amp plug?

The maximum current draw for the 13amp plug is 3kw at 230 volts. This is a significant amount of power, but the standard fuse fitted in a UK plug will not fail until the cable has heated to a risky temperature. A defective plug or socket can cause a fire therefore it is important to keep an eye on how much you are using particularly in the kitchen.

The ceramic fuses that are used in plugtops weigh around 25mm and are suitable for mains voltage of 240V. The fuses will have a BS Kitemark or similar mark on the side and they'll also contain sand. Alternatives to glass or plastic are available, but should never be used in combination with a live plug.

Most dual fuel range cookers in the UK require hard-wired and are not able to plug directly into a wall socket. They are usually connected via a separate cooker circuit that is only suitable for appliances using up to 20 amps.

You can verify the ring circuit in your home by looking at the fuse box, or by speaking to an electrician in your area. You can ask them if the sockets are connected to the same ring or if they're separate. They will also be able to tell you if there's a dedicated circuit to power your oven.

What is the maximum current draw of the cooker switch?

There is plenty of confusion over what the maximum current draw of a cooker's switch is. The fact is, most cookers aren't designed to connect to an ordinary socket, but rather are wired hard and fed into a dedicated oven ring circuit. This is because they will typically consume more than 20 amps of power when both the gas hob and electric oven are being used.

Therefore, you cannot find a dual range cooker with a fuel source that can be connected to a standard socket as this would present a very significant fire risk and be against electrical regulations. A licensed electrician should install new electrical wiring in the kitchen to the cooker. They will also make sure that the total load of the oven and hob do not exceed the circuit's power supply capacity.

The advantages of a dual fuel cooker are the receptive heating of a gas cooktop with the precision of an electric oven. This is why they're popular among chefs and home cooks alike. Dual fuel range cookers are perfect for experimenting with various cooking techniques, including searing or charcoaling.

When buying an appliance for your kitchen, you'll need to take into consideration a number of factors like size, performance and cost. You will also require a gas connection in your home for the appliance. If you're unsure then it's advisable to have an Gas Safe engineer inspect your property prior to installation.

The Currys range of dual fuel range cookers includes options to suit a variety of budgets, ranging from low-cost models from Indesit and Zanussi to our own exclusive Essentials collection. It is crucial to read the instruction manual for the owner before purchasing a dual-fuel range cooker. This will give you specific information about the electrical and gas requirements. You will need an electric connection to your home. A plumber may be required to connect it for you. Depending on the home you'll also have to make sure that you have a cooker ring circuit in place and signed off by a qualified electrician.
