Choosing Cribs Beds For Your Baby

Sleep is an essential part of the baby's life. A crib allows them to learn to sleep independently, and it also keeps you both safe during the night.

There are many types of cribs, all with different dimensions, styles, and mattress-support heights. We looked for cribs that are safe, simple to use and suitable for modern designs.

Size

A crib is a bed that is specifically designed for infants and babies. There are a variety of cribs, however they all are smaller than a toddler's mattress and provide a safe and secure sleeping space for your baby. Some cribs have wheels that let them be moved from room-to-room and the majority are designed to minimize the risk of SIDS by providing a supportive and comfortable environment that is similar to the womb.

Some parents will want to keep their baby in the crib for as long as they can, but others might be ready move to a toddler's bed sooner. The most commonly used crib is the standard crib. It is suitable for your child from birth up until they are 18 months old, or can climb out.

There are also bassinets which can be used from birth to four months, or until the baby is large for it. They are smaller and less bulky than cribs, but they can give parents the intimacy that some infants need in their early months. They are also more compact which makes them a good alternative if you're not certain what kind of bedding your child will prefer.

Both cribs and bassinets have safety guidelines to follow for the safety of your child. For instance, there should be no gaps larger than two fingers between the mattress and the frame of the crib and the slats should not be loose or missing. Also, the bed should not have cutouts in the headboard or footboard since they can trap a child's head or legs and increase the chance of being suffocated.

There are cribs available with a variety of styles and finishes. Some even come with integrated shelving units or changing tables. These can be particularly convenient if you plan on breastfeeding and allowing you to breastfeed your baby in the crib. If you're short of space or have a small budget, you can still find cribs that have all the necessities.

If you're willing spend a little extra, you can buy cribs that can be converted into daybeds for toddlers, toddlers or sofas. These are typically referred to as 4-in-1 cribs. They can be an ideal option for parents who don't wish to purchase a new crib every time their child outgrows the crib they currently have.

Style

If you are in the market for the perfect crib, take into consideration the style of the crib in relation to the nursery of your baby. You might want to choose a crib that matches the general theme of your home, whether contemporary or rustic. There are numerous crib options with natural wood or vibrant finishes, and in many unique designs and shapes.

Cribs have a long-standing tradition of providing safe sleeping spaces for babies. Initially, they were simple cradles that could be rocked. As the understanding of child safety increased and the need for a stationary crib became norm, and the designs changed to provide better protection against accidents or entrapment. The cribs of today are made with features like sturdy construction, the correct spacing of slats, as well as non-toxic materials. They are designed to ensure your baby's safety and well-being.

You'll also find cribs that include shelves or a changing table unit for ease during the newborn stage. This kind crib is not suitable for babies who are able to stand or climb. It can make it easier to get out.

Some cribs have adjustable mattress support heights, so you can lower the mattress as your baby grows. The higher setting works well for infants. The lower position is ideal when your child can sit up or roll in the bed. This typically happens around the age of a year.

The mattress of a crib can be perched on a one-piece board, a grid of wood slats or spring-wire frames. Both What to Expect and Baby Bargains recommend springs made of metal, because it is believed to be more sturdy than wooden slats, which could break or become loose over the course of time. The base should be firm and securely attached to the crib, so that it doesn't allow air to circulate around the mattress, a potential suffocation risk for infants.

If you plan to keep your baby in the crib as long as possible then think about a 4-in-1 crib which can be used as an infant's bed, a daybed, and eventually a full size bed. They typically have rails that are removable, making the transition from a crib a regular mattress less difficult. They also often come with adjustable mattress levels.

Safety

Regardless of the style or design you choose, it's essential to look for cribs that comply with stringent safety standards. In the United States this includes certifications by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and conformity with ASTM International Standards. Look for these certifications on the crib's packaging, or in its description. Also, check the crib's frame to see if there are any paint or wood defects that could pose danger for your baby.

If you plan to buy a new mattress for your baby's crib choose the most firm one you can find. This will lower the chance of death by accident due to the suffocation. Make sure that the mattress fits snugly inside the crib. A mattress that's too large or too small can be risky, since your baby could get caught between the mattress and the crib sides or headboard.

Certain reports of nonfatal accidents which include 21 reported fatalities identified in the NPR and two other fatalities reported during the NPR update, relate to the crib mattress being too soft. These incidents involve a variety of hazards, like gaps between the mattress and the side, or between the head and footboard which can lead to entrapment. Infants may also fall onto the mattress or get wedged between it and the wall or headboard.

Certain manufacturers are now advertising "breathable" crib mattress, which they claim will ensure a safe sleep and stop breathing in carbon dioxide from your baby's body. It is believed that this could contribute to SIDS. There is no evidence from an epidemiological study that breathable crib mattresses reduce the risk of SIDS.

Conversion

When you add an infant to your family, you'll likely need to buy lots of new items. This includes everything from clothing and toys to nursery furniture. Investing in cribs which can be converted into toddler beds or full size beds can help you save money on furniture and make the transition to childhood easier for your child and your family. These conversion kits can be bought for various brands of cots and include a footboard and headboard. Some models are GREENGUARD Gold Certified which means they emit low chemical emissions for better indoor air quality.

No matter if you choose a convertible crib or a standard crib it is essential to purchase the right mattress to ensure your child has a comfortable night's sleep. Choose from foam, innerspring, or gel mattresses that come in various sizes to suit your needs. Pick a foam mattress that is at least 2 3/8 inches thick, or an innerspring bed that is in compliance with the safety standards of the federal government.

If your child is ready to transition from the crib, you'll require a toddler bed or a full-size bed conversion kit. Ideally, cot sale should have it in place before your child turns two to ensure that the process goes smoothly and your child is comfortable with the new transition. Once your mattress and crib conversion kit is in place, converting the crib into a toddler bed or full-size bed should take less than 30 minutes for two people.

A few things can make the transition to a toddler bed more relaxing for your child, including keeping the bedroom decor and bedding consistent and moving the toddler bed into the same space as their crib. Giving your child a choice of stuffed animals or other toys to sleep with, and urging them to sleep at a regular schedule will help them settle.

A crib that converts into a full size bed is an excellent way to prolong the time-to-value of your investment. It also offers an extra bed for your child. Conversion kits are available in a variety of styles to match other furniture and are compatible with a variety of mattresses, including twin and full size.
