The Benefits of Boarding Up Windows

Protecting your property against storm damage is feasible with building windows with boards. It's a daunting job that requires the assistance of another person.

Take measurements of your windows to ensure the plywood will fit comfortably. Make sure you have the power drill and circular saw to cut the boards.

Seals Windows

It's a tried and reliable method of protecting your property from a storm. It's a simple process that requires only some basic tools and some time but can be very effective.

The purpose of boarding up windows is a primary purpose that is to stop the glass from breaking due to debris during the storm or other severe weather. The boarding is usually made of plywood and is attached to the frame of the window with either a nail or screw. There are other materials that could be used to board up windows, such as duct tape or zip ties, but plywood is affordable and easy to work with and is a great option.

To begin the boarding process, measure the width and height of each window. This will allow you to cut a sheet 5/8-inch thick of exterior-grade plywood (OSB) or oriented-strand board. The dimensions of the plywood should match the size of your window frame. Leave one inch of space. There should be a 4 inch gap between the edge of the plywood and the window frame to allow for expansion.

After the plywood has been cut to size After the plywood has been cut, screw in the hanger bolts with nuts. These bolts are made to attach to the studs of a house and are available at a wide range of hardware stores and home improvement stores. The plywood holes should be drilled to a diameter that is equal to the hanger bolts and set apart by a minimum of 2 inches on all sides. When the storm has passed and the plywood has been removed, the bolts can be unscrewed from the studs.

If a hurricane warning has been issued, it is important to begin the boarding-up process as soon as you can. This will enable you to ensure that you have enough plywood to safeguard your home and allow you to find any issues before the storm hits. The whole process should take around 30 minutes per window, and should be completed by two people.

Prevents Break-Ins

The idea of boarding up windows is an effective deterrent for burglars. Burglars tend to target homes that they know they can easily enter. If they see a property that is boarded up, they might be hesitant before attempting to gain entry. Windows that are screened off also stop burglars from having the ability to view inside the home and gain another security benefit.

A good way to protect your property is to secure it by boarding up windows. If you live in a region that is susceptible to extreme weather, boarding windows can help protect your home from damage. By covering windows with plywood you can stop snow, rain and other debris from getting in. This can save you money on expensive repairs and replacements.

It is important to select the right materials when choosing how to board your windows. Exterior-grade plywood is generally the best choice as it will hold up against the elements. You will also require a drill to make holes in the plywood, as well as screws and putty or caulk to close the holes. Make sure you determine the openings of your windows before you begin, and then mark where screws will be put. You should also write down the plywood panel you will need for each window or door. Once you have all the supplies, it's the time to board up your windows.

While boarding windows can prevent burglaries, this method is not foolproof. It is still possible for burglars to find ways around the board, and it's not always simple to install. Furthermore, if your only rely on boarding your windows, you may overlook other security measures that can help protect your home.

Installing a security fence is one of the best methods to deter burglaries. This is an excellent choice for vacant homes and is an excellent complement to boarding up windows. However, this method is not a good fit for commercial or residential buildings that want to maintain a level of curb appeal.

Reduces Heat Loss

In addition to safeguarding your home from burglaries, boarding your windows can cut down on the amount of heat that escapes through your windows. Around two-thirds of heat loss from a home or building is due inefficient windows. This is caused by a combination of convection, radiation and conduction. Radiation occurs when warm air comes into contact with cold glass, which causes the glass to radiate heat away from your body and home. Convection occurs when hot air rises and colder air replaces it. Conduction is the heat that passes through the window frame, which is usually made of metal.

It doesn't matter if it's extreme weather or vandalism, the breaking of windows is a frequent issue that homeowners and businesses must deal with. By boarding up a window, you can hide any rough or jagged edges and lets you keep your business open until the window can be repaired. This is particularly crucial for commercial spaces, which can be vulnerable to robbery attempts by thieves looking to avoid being seen through the window.

There are a few alternatives to plywood boards to protect against storm damage, but they don't provide the same level of security as a solid piece of wood covering a window. Roll-down hurricane shutters can be used to protect homes from storms. However, they can cause danger if they are not securely secured and require time to install and remove. You can also install self-sticking rubber weather seals that you can cut to fit the exact dimensions of your windows. Seals can be put in the window to close gaps and allow cold air to get in and warm air to exit.

You should consider installing windows that are energy-efficient with low-e coatings on glass that allows the sun's heat to flow through, while blocking other types of heat transfer. Consider draft stoppers. It's an easy tube of fabric that sits on the bottom of your windows and prevents the escape of cold air. These options are more expensive than a full window replacement but will reduce your energy costs in the long term.

boarding up doors

While boarding up windows may appear like a costly option to provide in an emergency, it actually saves you money over the long-term. By sealing windows and doors you can cut down on drafts which cause heat to escape the home or office. As a result you will pay lower energy bills during the winter.

Boards are inexpensive and easily available which makes them a great option for temporary protection against a storm. But before you make use of them to protect your property, you must carefully measure each window. Measure horizontally inside the trim and vertically between the bottom of the top trim and the sill. Add eight inches to the width and height of the trim to ensure a secure fit and to allow for expansion during a hurricane. A saw is required to cut OSB or plywood, and a drill is needed to mount the boards. To get the best results, it is recommended to install the boards prior to when the storm is predicted and then leave them in place until the conditions are safe.

A professional boarding-up company can do the job faster and more efficiently than a person trying to do it themselves. The professionals will employ hurricane clips instead of nails to adhere the boards to the property, which will prevent damage to the frames. After the storm, they'll remove all the boards and return your property back to its original state.

A broken window could be a huge issue for commercial property owners. It's not just ruining the appearance of your property but also lead to burglaries and other security issues. The act of boarding up windows that are broken will keep criminals and other opportunists away from your property until you can replace it.

You should also board up any vacant property you own. Properties that are vacant are more likely to be targeted by squatters as well as are ideal targets for arsonists therefore this is a crucial step to keep your property safe until it can be used again.
