World of Warcraft Item Upgrades Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it could raise an item's Mark level or Rarity and boost additional stats. Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests Each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specific amount. Item Level The value of an item's stats base increases when it is upgraded. This value is the total of all its leveled up perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly, depending on the upgrader you choose and the kind of upgrade you decide to perform. This is because of how many perks must be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded. It is also used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to determine a gating condition when waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios, and raids, as well as to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at the lower levels). The average item level is listed on the character sheet. The level of an item can help players compare the power of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's a good indicator of an item's quality and the amount of damage it is able to deal. Comparing items in the inventory of a seller is possible using the item level. The item level can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, including its value. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat. There are several theories about how the level of an item is calculated. One theory states that the item level is calculated using formulas that determine how valuable an item's stats actually are. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different values and gems in sockets increase the value of the item overall. This could result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is often very close to Blizzard's real item level. However, this is not the only factor that can affect an item's ilvl since the level of the area the item dropped in can alter the value of its stats, for example by adding a level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have higher ilvl. Item Stats The stats of an item are a major component of what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in different ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat mods of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by a player's level. Upgrades to an item can increase its stats. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. For instance, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas items with rare tiers will be upgraded several times at higher prices. Another way to change the stats on an item is by affixing it. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can provide the item additional damage, add a special capability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing the cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving a special name to the item. All affixes can be re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount of gold and other items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges, just like the other methods of rerolling. In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may also choose which stats to be kept on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within that range, unless it's a unique item or an item that is a God roll from a boss of a raid. This is another aspect that could be changed by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or choosing which stats to increase. However, as with the base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item level, and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats either lost or gained at the same time. Item Luck The Luck stat of a player increases the probability of obtaining items as well as the properties generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. It does not, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players a possibility to obtain better equipment earlier in the game and is therefore more beneficial in the initial game run than in later ones, as most players prioritize higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains. Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increases with each item level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing. The shields, armor and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on their material type) for a further +40 luck or to boost the luck of the item to 140. Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be crafted to increase the damage of any skill that is able to deal damage by five percent. These items are available at the store, or they can be made using the correct ingredients. Item Failure Upgrades to items are expensive and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent themselves from losing an item if the upgrade fails. The success rate of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased so high, and the probability that the upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.. The success of an item upgrade is also affected by the luck of that item. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent and each item that has Luck increases this chance by 5%. Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects may be obscured by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
