The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for bidet and washlet toilet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the next generation would be able to read the words. However, many words were being replaced with foreign ones, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

The company was founded in 1917 and its early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the beginning, Toto made products to meet the demands for modern, new urban housing. To do this, it used the country's first tunnel kiln to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began to expand overseas in order to benefit from sales and new markets. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the company's market share in the world.

In the 1990s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company employed the same just-in-time approach to its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher degree of customer satisfaction.

Toto continues to invent on the toilet technology. The latest toilet, for instance is equipped with an extremely powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally friendly than conventional toilets. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs and hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than standard models.

The company's first museum opened in 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's seminal products and their development as well as its group companies (all related to ceramics), historical background of plumbing and products like bath units, and in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum houses the bathroom equipped with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.

They also performed on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

You would expect a group with a name like Asia to be a prog rock band however it's actually a relatively straightforward rock outfit. The album opens with a strong and pounding sound with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into you. The album also has some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and distortion AOR which could sound completely wrong but actually works very well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The band was able to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous efforts.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the band's first album without the single track "A". ????? ?? contained a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia were in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was occupied with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
