How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.


The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If new audi car key fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. replacement audi key , when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. find out this here feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially if you're looking at the Bosch sensor, like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous issues with your car. It is an important part of the transmission of your Audi because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning. When this sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a common part that is found across the Audi 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
